Las Vegas Raiders’ Antonio Pierce sees valuable opportunity to train in Costa Mesa

The Las Vegas Raiders will play against “Rocky IV” this training camp.

No distractions. No fans. No family. Just the Raiders.

The Raiders are currently holding training camp in Costa Mesa, California, about 270 miles from home.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce sees the experience as a valuable opportunity.

“The biggest thing is when you go to training camp and you leave, it’s a brotherhood. Us against the world. The good thing about it is you can’t have fans here, right? So we have to entertain each other. And sometimes that’s good too. When you’re home in training camp, you can run to mom and dad and the family and the kids and the wife. Well, when they get to that hotel, it’s each other, it’s each other. Same with the coaches.

“I think it’s really crucial for our team to become the most cohesive unit that we can. It’s all sunshine and roses right now, right? The sun is shining. There’s going to be some dark moments and dark days, and we’re going to have to be ready to go through some adversity together.”

Although he lives far from his current home, Costa Mesa is not far from where it all began for Pierce.

“I’m excited,” the Compton native said. “30 miles from where I grew up. When the plane touched down, I smiled. It felt good to be home. I’m excited. I’m excited that our players are here and have a great opportunity to enjoy the nice weather and get away for 17 days before we go back to Vegas.”

While training camp is a long and grueling process, the gist of what Pierce and the Raiders hope to get out of it is pretty simple.

“Cohesion, competition, physicality, creating the Raiders identity and then really putting our own stamp on how we want to represent our style of play, both on offense, defense and special teams,” Pierce said.

The Raiders’ last day in Costa Mesa is August 7, with their first exhibition game just three days later.
