Hundreds of kites will take to the skies this weekend at Frankfort Beach

BENZIE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — Hundreds of kites will be flying in the air at Frankfort Beach tomorrow afternoon.

“Let’s Go Fly A Kite” is a recurring summer event of the Frankfurt-Elberta Chamber of Commerce, especially for kite flyers of all ages.

On July 27, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, 100 free kites will be given away to the first participants.

The kites are made in advance by the Chamber and a group of volunteers. The kites are handed out at the beach turnaround on Frankfort Beach.

The event was founded by Ginny Istnick and Greg Schmid with the idea of bringing kites and beaches together.

“Ginny said ‘we need kites here’ and I said ‘okay’ and she gave me $150 and said ‘buy kites’ and that’s what we did. I got a bunch of girlfriends together and we got together on a Saturday afternoon and we just gave away a hundred kites,” said lead volunteer Donna Phillips.

The Frankfort Willoughby Rotary Foundation provided an additional incentive to host the event three times a year, in June, July and August.

The next kite event is on August 24th.
