State Rep. Adam Schwadron (R-St. Charles) is one of eight candidates seeking Missouri’s GOP nomination for secretary of state. Incumbent Jay Ashcroft (R) is running for governor. Four of the leading candidates are current state legislators, including Schwadron. He joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” and tells listeners that he’s been kicking the campaign to the curb. Rep. Schwadron was in McDonald County in southwest Missouri on Thursday and is in Greene County today. He’s advocating for a ballot measure that would change one word in the Missouri Constitution. Rep. Schwadron tells listeners that some non-citizens have registered to vote, including through the federal Motor Voter Act. Officially known as the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, it was signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton (D). Republicans in the Missouri House of Representatives have been pushing for legislation that would ask voters to ban non-citizens from voting, but Democrats like former Rep. Chris Kelly (D-Columbia) say the law already prohibits that. Former Rep. Kelly notes that the Missouri Constitution says voters must be citizens. But Rep. Schwadron says it says all citizens have the right to vote. He wants to change that to say only citizens have the right to vote. He wants to change the word “all” to “only” and is optimistic that you will vote on the ballot across Missouri in November:
