Child dies in car, Georgia woman Kelsey Monaco charged with murder

A Georgia woman is charged with murder after a 4-year-old boy died in a car, authorities said.

On July 24, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Kelsey Monaco, 30, a resident of Fitzgerald, about 154 miles west of Savannah. Fitzgerald police asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the child’s death.

According to investigators, the child left his apartment unattended and got into a car.

The 4-year-old was then found unconscious in the car. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Monaco was arrested and booked into the Ben Hill County Jail.

USA TODAY has reached out to authorities to determine Monaco’s relationship to the child and whether the child died from overheating in the car. We have not heard back.

Georgia woman charged with murder in death of 4-year-old child

Monaco is currently being held in the Ben Hill County Jail.

Arrest records show Monaco faces the following charges:

  • 1 charge, first degree child abuse
  • 1 count, felony murder

This investigation into the 4-year-old’s death is still active and ongoing. When the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Cordelle Judicial District Attorney’s Office for prosecution, authorities said.
