Hospice Volunteer Rachel Sherman Receives Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award

Rachel Sherman, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ACHPN, was honored with the 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award during the Juneteenth Celebration of Black Excellence Networking and Awards event at Overdue Recognition Art Gallery in Bowie, Maryland.

The award recognizes volunteer service and is sponsored by AmeriCorps and the Office of the President of the United States. Sherman has volunteered more than 4,000 hours in her lifetime. “That is no small feat, but we are not surprised given her tireless efforts to advocate for patients and families in our communities,” said Becky Miller, president and CEO of Hospice of the Chesapeake. “She is tenacious and fearless in her work to promote health equity and access to hospice and palliative care for all. Dr. Sherman’s role and daily focus at Hospice of the Chesapeake recently expanded to Director of Advocacy and Legislative Affairs.”

She is an advanced care nurse practitioner, military veteran, community activist, educator, and entrepreneur with a passion for addressing issues of discrimination, equity, and social justice. Sherman is a co-founder of We the People of Prince George’s County and is a member of the National Association Against Police Brutality, The NAACP — Prince George’s County Branch, The Maryland Academy of Advanced Practice Clinicians, and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association. In 2023, she was appointed to the Maryland Board of Nursing by Governor Wes Moore.

“We are very proud of the work Dr. Sherman does every day to support people living with illness and loss,” said Miller.
