Three children and an adult were removed from a Scottsdale hiking trail Friday morning and treated for heat exhaustion after they became lost while hiking at a family reunion.

Officials said the rescue operation involved a 12-month-old and an 18-month-old child.

The Scottsdale Fire Department received reports of 13 lost hikers at McDowell Sonoran Preserve, near the Gateway Trailhead, around 10 a.m. A 10-year-old girl was also reported suffering from heat exhaustion.

The hikers told dispatchers they were low on water and their phones were less than 5% charged.

Rescuers found the family about two miles from the trailhead, resting in the shade of a tree in a riverbed near the trail.

The three children, including the 10-year-old girl, the 18-month-old and the 12-month-old child, were quickly removed from the trail and taken to a nearby children’s hospital. An adult woman in the group was also removed from the trail, officials said.

The rest of the family was able to walk back to the trailhead with the help of rescuers.

Scottsdale firefighters reported Friday afternoon that the 10-year-old girl was in good condition, but the conditions of the two young children were unknown.

Officials said the hikers began their family reunion activity around 7:30 a.m., with relatives visiting from outside Phoenix. They became lost on the trail and began losing water.
