Shabaz Khaliq steps down as coach of Mooresville High School boys basketball team

Mooresville boys basketball coach Shabaz Khaliq resigned Friday, athletic director Mike Mossbrucker said.

Mossbrucker declined to comment further, except to say the school would be working on an action plan next week to hire a new coach. Khaliq did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The timing for hiring a new coach is certainly not ideal, with school starting in two weeks. Khaliq was 35-34 in three seasons at Mooresville, including a 10-14 mark last season. He was hired after the 2020-21 season to replace longtime coach Bob Carter, who retired after 18 seasons leading the Pioneers.

Khaliq previously coached at Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Fort Wayne North Side and Richmond, compiling a career record of 249-130 in 16 seasons. His team at North Side reached the Class 4A state championship game in 2016-17, losing to Ben Davis.
