All-Kansas beer hits local shelves

HOLTON (KSNT) – A few Kansas residents are using a new beer law to support each other’s businesses.

Thanks to a new Kansas law that allows microbreweries to sell directly to other businesses, Holton-based Willcott Brewing will begin distributing to public vendors in northeastern Kansas.

Willcott Brewing makes beer using ingredients that are exclusively locally sourced. The beer is now available near you.

“In 1874, Turkey Red Wheat was first introduced into the state of Kansas, which is why we call it 1874,” says Jennifer Willcott of Willcott Brewing.

She said it’s the unique Kansas wheat that gives the beer its flavor.

The Kansas farmer who supplies Willcott’s barley says it’s tricky to get it just right, but worth the effort.

“It really has to be a very refined product for these brewers to be able to make great beer with it,” said Lance Tischhauser, farmer at Kansas Malt Company.

Willcott’s first delivery since the law changed was to a grocery store down the street, Cecil K’s Hometown Market.

Chad Bontrager, owner of Cecil K’s Hometown Market, said Willcott’s 1874 beer is now one of about 200 locally produced products on his shelves.

“Because we are a local grocery store and we run it ourselves, we really value doing business with other local people and getting those products out to people in the community in a way that makes it really easy for them,” Bontrager said.

A local beer, made with local ingredients, sold at local grocers.

“It’s really interesting how often we forget about farmers and small business owners. I think today marks a moment in history,” Willcott said. “A moment where we really need to focus on what small businesses contribute to our state.”

In addition to Holton, Willcott Brewing told 27 News you can also expect 1874 to open in Topeka and Leavenworth soon.
