2 best places to get poutine in the US are in Maine, Vermont

Are you familiar with the word “frites”? If so, you know that it is the French term for French fries. You also know that the “s” at the end is silent. So what do you think of poutine?

Poutine is one of America’s most popular foods, but in New Hampshire, these fries are on a whole other level: they’re the Granite State’s must-try favorite.

According to tastingtable.com, the best places in the country to get excellent poutine are not far from us in New England.

One of the best places is in Portland, Maine, where you’ll find the very popular Duckfat restaurant. Owned by Nancy Pugh and Rob Evans, Duckfat epitomizes what poutine should be. Made with Belgian fries, twice fried in duck fat, and topped with cheese curds, duck jus, and fresh chives, this Portland take on poutine is excellent and worth the trip.

Poutine is so beloved by the owners that they opened the Duckfat Frites Shack storefront for quick fries, just like they know them in Belgium (where the original fried potato originated).

The only other New England restaurant to make the list of best poutine in America is Burlington, Vermont. This city is a gem for so many reasons, and the good food is one of them.

Leunig’s Bistro is as authentically French as it gets. Open since 1980, the bistro serves a duck confit poutine that is divine. The duck jus is slow roasted for hours and poured over fries and topped with Maplebrook cheese curds, herbs and duck jus. You’ll also find this entree on the smaller kiosk menu.
