Each of the three Denver artists or art collectives will receive $50,000 in recognition and support for exceptional artistic contributions that pursue positive impact and social justice. The award includes $35,000 in cash and $15,000 for the creation of a socially engaged project.

In announcing the award, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston noted that “Denver has a proud heritage of artists whose work is guided by the issues, hopes and dreams of their communities. Now more than ever, cities need artists who can imagine new possibilities that will reshape and improve our country.”

Gary Steuer, president and CEO of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, noted that “for more than a decade, we have made a strategic decision to direct our funding to the arts. The arts have the power to transform every aspect of community life, from the economy to the social fabric of neighborhoods. This new award is a testament to our commitment and the potential we see in our local artists.”

Tariana Navas-Nieves, associate director of Denver Arts & Venues, added: “Generations from now, when people look back on who and what shaped Denver into a leading city, these art expressions will be part of that story.”
