Iowa weather in late July: above-normal temperatures, chance of storms

Des Moines, IA – A mostly dry and warm forecast is expected today as afternoon temperatures climb into the mid 80s to low 90s. There is a slight chance of isolated showers and storms across parts of southern Iowa late tonight. Severe weather chances are low, but brief, heavy downpours and gusty winds are possible.

According to the National Weather Service Des Moines, the extended forecast continues to focus on increasing heat and humidity as we wrap up July and head into August. Highs in the 90s and humid conditions will push heat index values near or above 100 at times, especially as the heat peaks around the middle of the week.

Intermittent chances for scattered showers and storm activity will continue throughout the week, with the highest chances occurring Sunday night through Monday. Above-normal temperatures are expected to persist as we head into next weekend and beyond, as a strong ridge of high pressure dominates the weather pattern.

Today’s temperatures are expected to range from 85 to 90 degrees. Sunday and Monday will see temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, with Tuesday and Wednesday reaching the low to mid 90s. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday, with highs in the mid 80s.
