Born October 18, 1992 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Johannes “Jan Johannes” Florence is a famous surfer who has had a major impact on the sport. The 31-year-old athlete, 6-foot-1, is set to make his second appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Florence was introduced to surfing by his mother, Alexandraan avid surfer himself, from a very young age. Growing up in Hale’iwa, Oahu, with the famous Banzai Pipeline practically in his backyard, he quickly developed a natural affinity for the ocean and the sport. By the age of 13, he had entered the Triple Crown of Surfing, becoming the youngest surfer in the history of the event.

In 2011, Florence reached the sport’s premier competition, the World Surf League Championship Tour (CT). After narrowly missing out on the title in 2013, he finally achieved his goal in 2016 and retained his world title the following year. Despite multiple injuries and a torn ACL in 2019, Florence quickly recovered and secured an Olympic spot, just ahead of the surfing legend Kelly roofer.

Florence’s journey to the Olympics has not been without its challenges. Just two and a half months before the postponed Tokyo 2021 Games, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament again. However, after an exceptionally quick recovery, he was declared fit to compete in the Japanese capital. Despite being eliminated in the last 16, Florence has managed to qualify for Paris 2024.

According to Olympics.com, Florence is hoping to stay injury-free for the competition in the iconic Teahupo’o in Tahiti. With a stellar season so far in the World Surf League, Florence looks set to make a splash in his Olympic encore.
