WSJ seeks beverage and tobacco reporter

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter to cover the beverage and tobacco industries.

This is a corporate beat featuring some of the world’s biggest companies, from the brewer of Budweiser to Coca-Cola, as well as the makers of Marlboro and the latest generation of e-cigarettes.

It is a unique starting point from which we can reveal major business scoops and uncover eye-opening stories about consumer behavior, inflation, regulation, public health and social issues.

Working with other members of the corporate team, this reporter focuses on covering business leaders, retailers, major brands, and consumer habits to set the agenda for executives, investors, and consumers.

We are looking for someone with experience in business and financial journalism, a proven ability to transport readers into boardrooms, and a knack for finding and telling human stories. This reporter is comfortable on video and audio and enjoys experimenting with data, visuals, and storytelling formats. A desire to collaborate with colleagues in other reporting areas is a must.

The position is based in New York and reports to the NY Corporate Bureau Chief.

You will:

  • Develop resources and break news in your space so you become the go-to source of insights for audiences in your space
  • Create and deliver in-depth business and research stories, videos, and podcasts.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the country and the world in an international newsroom.

You have:

  • Ideally at least three years of experience in reporting
  • A track record of dominating a highly competitive beat
  • Deadline skills to report and write clearly under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sources and write authoritatively about what is happening and what it means
  • A track record of tackling ambitious projects, finding original approaches to reporting and working with images to find creative storytelling techniques
