(WJET/WFXP) — National Chicken Wing Day is Monday, July 29, and dozens of national restaurant chains are offering deals to celebrate. In case you haven’t heard of it, it started in 1977 with a proclamation by then-mayor of Buffalo, New York (the supposed birthplace of chicken wings), Stan Makowski.

Did you know that “buffalo wings” also got their name? Learn more about this spicy and tangy holiday on the official National Chicken Wing Day website.

Below are some participating national chains that have special offers on Mondays.

Buffalo Wild Wings

B-Dubs is offering 6 free wings, boneless or traditional, with a minimum order of $10. The deal is valid for dine-in, online and via the Buffalo Wild Wings app with promo code WING DAY.

If you celebrate the wing holiday at B-Dubs, you will also receive a bounce-back burger deal! Buy any burger and get 6 free wings (valid from 7/30 to 8/30)

Applebees

Buy one, get one free on Monday, with 10-piece boneless wings or 9-piece bone-in wings. The deal is only available online. You can order on the Applebee’s website or through the app with the code WING DAY24 at checkout. Deal is available for pickup or delivery.

Horns

When you dine on National Wing Day, purchase 10 wings of any style and get 10 wings free. The cheapest item is free. This deal cannot be combined with other discounts.

If you order six boneless or bone-in wings through the Popeyes app or online on Monday, you’ll get a second order of six wings for just $1.

Smokey Bones is offering a buy one get one free deal on National Chicken Wing Day. Bones Club members will also be getting a free six wings deal.

7-Eleven:

7-Eleven is offering BOGO deals on its boneless and bone-in wings for National Chicken Wing Day. If you order a 5-piece bone-in wing, you’ll get 5 more free. If you prefer boneless, you’ll get 8 more free when you order an 8-piece boneless wing. This deal is valid at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes locations.

Finally, if you do decide to cook some chicken wings at home, make sure you handle raw chicken properly. Just a few years ago, researchers at Drexel University started the Don’t Wash Your Chicken program, hoping to debunk the belief that you need to wash raw chicken before cooking it.

“Chicken is already washed,” the program says. “Today’s production cleans the chicken, so there is no dirt, feathers or anything else on it that needs to be washed off. Poultry can have a layer of water and protein: this is boiled off, or you can remove it with a clean paper towel and then wash your hands.”
