Weather forecast: Heat and chance of storms return

Our forecast for Sunday is for it to remain warm, with a high of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Des Moines and temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

An upper-air disturbance moving northward into Iowa will increase storm chances Sunday night and continue into early Monday morning as a wind shift line begins to cross the state. We will also see storm chances later in the week, Wednesday through Friday, as a series of fronts and upper-air waves move across Iowa. The timing of the rounds of storms is shown in the gallery below.

The short-term HRRR model below shows the likelihood of organized updrafts in the storms from late Sunday night through early Monday morning. This makes it unlikely that a few severe thunderstorms will occur during this period.

According to the Colorado State University algorithm, the output of which is shown below, there is also a chance of severe weather on Wednesday (there is no mechanism that can generate storms on Tuesday).

Below, the European model shows the expected rainfall amount in Iowa through Monday.

It will remain warm this week, with highs of 32 through Friday, as the gallery below shows.

According to the weather forecast for the next 6 to 10 and 8 to 14 days, temperatures will remain above average and the chance of rain below average, until the first week of August.
