EDGEWATER, Maryland. — The 122-foot yacht Lovebug ran aground and sank about a half mile offshore between Beverly Beach and Curtis Point at the mouth of the West River on July 27, 2024.

The Coast Guard, along with partner agencies, responded to the incident at around 12:30 and found the vessel capsized, although the cause remains unclear. All five people on board were safely rescued by a Good Samaritan and a nearby tugboat.

To limit possible pollution, a salvage company has placed an oil boom around the ship. Emergency responders from the US Coast Guard Sector Maryland – National Capital Region are currently on site.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Annapolis dispatched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II team for search and rescue operations and to secure the accident scene.

There have been no reports of pollution so far and the ship is not blocking the shipping channel. A salvage plan for the Lovebug is being drawn up.

The Lovebug is a chartered vessel available for $125,000 per week.
