Late goal beats Detroit City FC, extends winless streak to four

A late goal gave Sacramento Republic FC a 1-0 win over Detroit City FC in a United Soccer League championship game Saturday night in Hamtramck.

The goal was scored by Russell Cicerone in the 84th minute. In a game that began to go downhill when DCFC keeper Carlos Saldaña was given away when a Sacramento forward blocked his attempted clearing pass, Jared Timmer whipped in a cross from the corner that Cicerone fired home at the far post.

Detroit City’s best chance came in the 20th minute, when Maxi Rodriguez unleashed a powerful shot that was saved by Sacramento keeper Daniel Vitiello, with Alex Villanueva curling the rebound onto the post.

Vitiello played a key role again in the 32nd minute when Elvis Ahmo headed a free kick against the keeper, who made a great save.

Three minutes after the break, Ahmo managed to score again from close range, but Vitiello was also up to the task.

Saldaña made his most difficult save in the 58th minute when he reached behind him to stop a shot from Nick Ross.

Detroit City is 0-2-2 in its last four games and is 8-6-4, sixth in the Eastern Conference, but has two or three games in hand in the standings, more than any team in that league.

Sacramento is 9-3-8, sits in second place in the Western Conference and has not lost a single away game this season.

DCFC plays at Hartford Athletic on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., then returns to Keyworth Stadium for a 4 p.m. match on Saturday against Rhode Island FC.
