PHOTOS: Five rescued from capsized superyacht in West River

For many, it was a shocking sight in the bay today: a 38-metre yacht lying on its side in the West River.

The superyacht Darlingspotted earlier this week in Annapolis, partially capsized near the mouth of the river around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Natural Resources Police responded to reports of a vessel taking on water.

Other boaters said they heard the call on VHF channel 16 but had no idea it was from a 122-foot yacht.

When Natural Resources Police arrived, they found five people on board. All five were brought to shore safely and did not require medical treatment.

The Coast Guard also responded to the incident. We are still waiting for more details on what may have gone wrong on the yacht. The vessel has a depth of eight feet.

Word spread quickly among Anne Arundel County boaters who passed by the scene. The yacht is a real eye-catcher, so many had seen it before in Annapolis and on the bay. CBM follower David Driftmier sent us this “before” photo of the Darling moored at Spa Creek (within sight of the Chesapeake Bay Magazine offices).

According to an earlier mention of the boat, Darling is an Italian boat built by Sanlorenzo in 2010 and updated in 2017. She sleeps 11 guests in five cabins and can accommodate seven or eight crew members. She features zero speed stabilizers, a flybridge sundeck with jacuzzi, tender/jet ski garage and a full-beam master stateroom with a full bean master bathroom and owner’s office.

We will continue to follow this story and will update as we hear more from the researchers.
