Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear speaks at Democratic Party celebration in Iowa

DES MOINES, IOWA — The Iowa Democratic Party will hold its annual Liberty & Justice Celebration Saturday night at the Iowa Events Center.

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the party’s presidential nomination. Speaking with her were two state legislators, State Auditor Rob Sand, and Democratic candidates running for federal office: IA-03 candidate Lanon Baccam, IA-02 candidate Sarah Corkery, and IA-4 candidate Ryan Melton.

“There are 101 days left until we elect the first woman president,” said House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst, (D) District 32 of Windsor Heights.

“Vice President Harris, Iowa Democrats are excited, we are ready and we are ready to make history again,” said Senate Minority Leader Pam Jochum, (D) District 36 of Dubuque.

The final speaker of the evening was Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D). During his speech, Beshear pledged his support for Vice President Harris, but also criticized the former president and his new running mate J.D. Vance.

After the speech, WHO 13 News asked Beshear what he would say if Vice President Harris asked him to be her running mate.

“…It (Kentucky) will always be my home and the only reason I would consider something else is if I felt like I could be of more help to the people of Kentucky in a different position. And maybe I can take a little bit of what we’ve done and use it in the United States of America to lift everybody up and just stop this constant back and forth. We can’t look at the world through a red or blue lens. Not everything is Democratic or Republican and everybody is tired of being asked to pick a side. From the car you drive to the beer you drink, you’re supposed to pick a side. So right now I feel honored to be considered. But no matter what happens, I’m going to do everything I can between now and Election Day to help Vice President Harris become President Harris,” Beshear said.

Beshear indicated in his speech that he had spoken to the vice president by phone last week after news broke of President Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
