Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Timberwolves, men’s basketball: Canada opened its first Olympic tournament since 2000 with an 86-79 win over Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece. Alexander was 0-for-5 from the field in 12:33.

Sarah Bacon, Gophers, Diving: Bacon, a five-time national U-diver champion, won Team USA’s first medal in Paris, teaming with Kassidy Cook to win silver in the women’s 3-meter springboard.

Michael Boxall, Loons, men’s football: The 35-year-old defender is playing his third Olympic Games for New Zealand, who lost 4-1 to the United States in a group match. New Zealand and the US are level on three points in Group A with one game remaining.

Peter Durben, Saint Paul, shooting: Durben, originally from St. Paul, competed in the 50-meter rifle event at the 1992 Olympics. He is the rifle coach for the U.S. shooting team, which finished 13th.

Rudy Gobert, Timberwolves, men’s basketball: He scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds in 18 minutes for France during the host nation’s 78-66 win over Brazil.

Joe English, Timberwolves, men’s basketball: The 36-year-old Ingles, who signed with the Wolves this month, played about two minutes and scored no points in Australia’s 92-80 win over Spain.
