Trudeau announces by-elections for September 16 in constituencies in Quebec and Manitoba

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called two by-elections to fill vacant seats in Quebec and Manitoba.

On September 16, voters will go to the polls in the Elmwood-Transcona constituency in Manitoba and the LaSalle-Émard-Verdun constituency in the Montreal area.

The constituency of Manitoba was held by the New Democratic Party until MP Daniel Blaikie resigned in March to run for the office of the province’s premier, Wab Kinew.

Blaikie has held the federal seat since the 2015 elections.

The Quebec constituency was held by former Liberal Party justice minister David Lametti, who resigned in January after being ousted from Trudeau’s cabinet in a cabinet reshuffle the previous summer.

The byelections are the first test for Trudeau’s Liberals since losing a byelection in June in Toronto-St. Paul, a constituency the Liberals had held for decades.
