The latest news about safety number 1 in America Jonah Williams

America’s No. 1 safety is set to make a decision on a college player as the LSU Tigers look to differentiate themselves in the closing stages of the season.

Jonah Williams, the highest-ranked safety in the 2025 cycle, is nearing the finish line of his recruitment with several heavyweights among his finalists.

LSU joins Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon and USC on the list of five schools with a firm date for participation: August 24.

He tops Kelly and Co.’s list of “must haves” in the current recruiting class as LSU safeties coach Jake Olsen turns up the heat for the coveted defensive back.

LSU currently has commitments from Bryce Underwood (No. 1 QB), DJ Pickett (No. 1 CB) and Harlem Berry (No. 1 RB), along with several other top prospects in the current draft.

In the final phase, the Tigers want to bring in their fourth prospect, who is ranked number 1 at his position, in Williams.

On Friday, LSU held its annual Bayou Splash recruiting event, with Williams expected in town after confirming he would be coming to Baton Rouge.

Williams was ultimately unable to travel to Louisiana, as bad weather and other factors kept him from the Lone Star State.

Earlier this week, on Thursday, he visited Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns after the Recruiting Dead Period had passed and the Longhorns had gotten the coveted talent on campus.

“Texas has always been a sleeping place for me,” Williams told Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports. “Nobody thought I was interested in Texas anymore.”

The NCAA Recruiting Dead Period will begin again on August 1 and will last a month, meaning the Longhorns could have one last chance before Williams makes a decision on August 24.

Williams was rumored to be coming to Baton Rouge early next week to visit the LSU Tigers, but according to On3 Sports, the Longhorns have likely already had their last in-person visit.

Kelly and co. keep the pedal to the metal in hopes of getting five-star safety to Death Valley before the Dead Period rears its ugly head again.

On3 Sports recruitment expert Billy Embody predicted the Tigers would sign Williams last week after revealing a deal date.

There are key pieces to Williams’ recruitment that put LSU in a good position. He’s a dual-sport phenom, and the Tigers have placed both the football and baseball staffs in front of him to provide a long-term pitch.

Despite being one of the top players on the field in 2025, he is also seen as a popular target on the field.

Williams is one of the top baseball prospects in the Lone Star State and plans to play both football and baseball at the next level.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound player took an official visit to LSU in June, where he had the opportunity to tour both programs on campus.

LSU baseball’s Brian Kelly and Jay Johnson pitched, after which Williams had a photo shoot wearing both uniforms.

Williams is one of the best baseball prospects in Texas, primarily pitching left-handed and playing outfield. He has clocked a 94 mph fastball and several top programs are eyeing him as a dual-sport athlete.

Brian Kelly and LSU head baseball coach Jay Johnson certainly have a good idea for Williams.

LSU’s baseball program, led by Johnson and Co., recently won the College World Series in 2023, while the football program has room for early playing time in the secondary.

Williams has already played a fair few games this summer, with Texas A&M, Texas and Oregon seen as the main competitors to sign him, but the Tigers will once again face an exciting battle.

LSU coaches Corey Raymond and Jake Olsen are keeping a close eye on one of America’s best all-around athletes as he enters the final stages of his recruitment.

Now, the decision is set for August 24, and LSU hopes to expand its second-best recruiting class for the 2025 cycle.

As it stands now, LSU will have to face some heavyweights in the final stretch to become one of the top prospects in 2025.
