Grenada: CARICOM leaders assess damage from Hurricane Beryl ahead of 47th meeting

Grenada: Before the start of the 47th Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Meeting, the outgoing Chairman of CARICOM and President of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and his delegation, together with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, visited Carriacou to witness the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.

They were also accompanied by CARICOM Secretary General Carla Barnett when they visited Carriacou to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl and were also given access to the ongoing relief and recovery efforts of the Guyana Defence Force soldiers.

Earlier, several OECS members and Prime Ministers also visited Grenada to meet with survivors and to investigate the aftermath of the then Category 4 storm. Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, accompanied by Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, visited the country and met with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchel and also released emergency funds for other Caribbean islands.

Prime Minister Mitchell stated that it is important to highlight the impact of climate change on our lives. He also stressed the importance of discussing climate resilience and sustainable development during the 47th regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.

He further noted that this meeting will yield important results that can promote the growth of the Caribbean countries. Most importantly, the discussion on the regional challenges that governments and also citizens are facing.

The 47e The CARICOM meeting will be a testament to the region’s unity and determination to work together towards sustainable development for its people.
