US’s Huske and Walsh win gold and silver in women’s 100m butterfly at Olympics

American swimmers Torri Huske And Gretchen Walsh finished first and second respectively in the women’s 100-meter butterfly final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Sunday (July 28).

Huske, 21, recorded a time of 55.59 seconds, beating Walsh’s mark by 0.04. Zhang Yufei finished with a time of 56.21 and took bronze.

Huske, who is taking a gap year from Stanford, previously finished fourth in the 100-meter butterfly and won silver in the women’s 4×100-meter medley relay at the pandemic-postponed 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Walsh, 21, who swims collegiately for the University of Virginia, broke the world record in the 100 meters last month at the U.S. qualifying trials in Indianapolis after not being selected to the Tokyo Olympic team.

The women’s 100m butterfly took place after the French swimmer Leon Marchand a new Olympic record, winning gold minutes earlier in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Marchand, 22, was clocked in 4:02.95, breaking the record previously set by U.S. Michael Phelpsthe most decorated swimmer in history, won his first career Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The French swimmer had previously broken Phelps’ Olympic record, which had been the official world record for almost 15 years, at the 2023 World Championships. Marchand won convincingly by breaking away from the field in the second 100-meter split, the backstroke, with the Japanese Tomoyuki Matsushita finished in 4:08.62 for silver and the US Carson Foster time 4:08.66 for bronze.
