Update: $10,000 reward for finding missing 6-year-old

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) held a press conference Sunday afternoon to provide an update on the search for Fawzan Hassan, a 6-year-old boy who disappeared on Saturday, July 27.

Hassan, who is nonverbal and autistic, was last seen around 3 p.m. Saturday at a playground at Bohrer Park (506 S Frederick Ave) in Gaithersburg. He is wearing a green shirt, blue jeans and blue and white sneakers.

Members of the Ethiopian Silt’e community, who were hosting an event at the park when the child disappeared, are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who finds Hassan. The reward is not associated with MCPD or Montgomery County.

Police are urging residents to check their properties, including under porches and patios, swimming pools, outbuildings, unlocked cars and nearby playgrounds, and to review any surveillance footage of their homes.

Residents are also encouraged to print this flyer and distribute it in their communities. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Fawzan Hassan is asked to call 911.

Approaching Nonverbal Autistic Children: Call 911 immediately. When dealing with a nonverbal autistic child, it is important to approach them calmly and slowly. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises that could startle them. Speak in a soft, reassuring tone, even if the child does not respond verbally. Nonverbal autistic children may not respond to their name, so try to use other cues, such as visual cues or familiar objects, to get their attention. Above all, keep the child safe and wait for the police to arrive.
