Obituary: Jose Valladolid Ramirez, 36, of Sacramento

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jose Valladolid Ramirez, age 36, who was tragically struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Fruitridge Road, one of Sacramento’s most dangerous streets, on June 10, 2024.

Jose was born on November 30, 1987 in Mexicali, Mexico to Ofelia Ramirez and Armando Valladolid. He moved to the United States as a young child, where he was raised in Sacramento. Jose grew up to be a loving husband, devoted father, and skilled handyman, often teaching his children the finer points of auto repair.

On that fateful day, Jose was struck by a Dodge Ram while driving through an industrial area of Fruitridge Road, where the speed limit is 50 mph. He became the third fatality on that road this year, following the deaths of James C. Lind and David Rink. The dangerous stretch of road is a concern to many because of its high speed limit and lack of proper infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

Jose was not only a victim of a tragic accident, but also a man with a life full of love and devotion. He married his childhood sweetheart, Mayra Miranda, with whom he shared more than 20 years of memories. The couple met as teenagers and quickly became inseparable. Together they faced life’s challenges and celebrated its joys, raising two wonderful children, Giovanny and Amayrani.

Despite their separation in recent years, Jose remained a constant presence in his children’s lives, passing on his knowledge and skills. He was especially proud of teaching his son, Giovanny, how to change the oil in his car and helping his daughter, Amayrani, replace a car transmission.

Jose’s unexpected death has left a deep void in the lives of his family and friends. His wife, Mayra, remembers the early morning knock on the door that brought the devastating news of his passing. The Sacramento County coroner’s office informed her that Jose had been riding her bike that evening, an activity she did not remember him doing often, adding to the mystery and pain of his loss.

As the Sacramento community mourns the loss of Jose Valladolid Ramirez, his family is dealing with the emotional and financial burdens that follow such a tragedy. A GoFundMe campaign was started to help cover funeral expenses, but it has struggled to gain traction. Meanwhile, Mayra has had to deal with the financial and emotional toll, taking a leave of absence from her medical transport job to grieve and care for her children.

Jose’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His story also serves as a poignant reminder of the need for safer roads and better infrastructure to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to support the ongoing needs of Jose’s children and to advocate for safer streets in Sacramento. Rest in peace, Jose.
