Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Deputy Rescues Five People From Burning Car • Unfiltered with Kiran

POINTE COUPEE — A sheriff’s deputy in Pointe Coupee Parish is being honored as a hero after he saved the lives of five people in a car that went up in flames.

The incident began when Deputy Sheriff Robert Williams, who had pulled over a car, saw a green Nissan Sentra drive by with an illegally tinted window and sitting low to the ground. He had planned to pull them over, but something else would soon catch his attention.

“I saw something dripping from the bottom of the car. I thought it was water or something like the air conditioning. I saw the car was too low. It hit the road and there was a spark and then there were flames. I saw more dripping. So I thought it was gasoline,” said Deputy Williams.

The deputy sheriff quickly realized that there was a gas leak coming from the car and because of the imminent danger, he immediately ordered the occupants to exit the vehicle.

“I didn’t even know my car was leaking,” said Devonte Honore, the driver. “He was very good and efficient, and he saw the gas leaking onto the ground.”

“So I turned on my lights and I went to the speaker and said, ‘Get out of the car. Get out of the car.’ He looked at me confused. I told them their car was on fire. I just kept telling them to get out,” the deputy sheriff continued.

The two people in the front seats managed to get out of the car quickly. However, there was a moment of struggle as Deputy Williams tried to open the rear doors to free the trapped passengers.

“We couldn’t get the back door open. I ran over, broke the window and helped get the back door open. Three more passengers got out,” said Deputy Williams of the PCSO Narcotics Division.

While the last passengers were out, a fire broke out in the car.

The driver of the car expressed his deep gratitude. “I salute him and I appreciate him for all that he has done,” Honore exclaimed. “Without the quick thinking and decisive actions of Deputy Williams, the occupants could have been trapped in the burning vehicle, which could have resulted in a tragic outcome.”

“He got everyone out of the car and just in time,” Honore said. “I’m so grateful to him.”

Deputy Sheriff Williams’ heroic actions have earned him praise and recognition, especially for the five people whose lives were saved as a result of his quick actions.

“I told my mom this morning that these are the kinds of things that make this job worth doing,” the deputy sheriff said.
