Here’s What Reggie Wayne Is Most Excited About During Training Camp – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — The Colts have a lot of wide receivers to be excited about this season.

Michael Pittman Jr. just signed a midseason extension, rookie Adonai Mitchell has impressed in training camp so far, and Josh Down is hoping to continue his promising start to his career.

But Reggie Wayne is curious to see what he’ll see from someone else in the camp.

“The excitement I have for Alec (Pierce) in this camp right now is unmatched,” Wayne said.

Wayne said Pierce hasn’t necessarily had to compete for roles on offense in his career. Pierce was drafted as the No. 3 receiver after being drafted by the Colts and was given the No. 2 receiver spot last year, Wayne explained.

Now, other receivers are pushing Pierce for a spot on the depth chart during training camp.

“We got to see the Alec (Pierce) that we expect to see. A guy that comes in and stays professional,” Wayne said. “Comes in and makes plays. He’s never really on fire and I think this is his time.”

Mitchell is the main competition Pierce has for his role in the wide receiver room. As for Mitchell, Wayne is eager to see him grow in training camp. Wayne said that if Mitchell is given the opportunity, he can make big plays.

Wayne also praised Mitchell’s intelligence and competitiveness, describing him as an alpha male.

“I need all the dogs I can get,” Wayne said.

As for the battle between the two receivers, he said he just wants to see them come in and compete with each other. He said they’ll both eventually see action, and he’s not worried about that.

As for the best receiver in the room, Wayne wants to see more leadership from Pittman Jr. He wants him to aspire to become a team captain.

“Let’s get a ‘C’ on our chest,” Wayne said of Pittman Jr. “I’ve never seen a guy make $25 million who wasn’t a captain.”

He said he knows Pittman Jr. can play, and now he wants him to take his game to “a whole other stratosphere.”

Colts training camp practices resume on Tuesday, which is also the first day with full pads. Practice is from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
