The San Antonio Spurs were interested in Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard

According to a report by Jake Fischer in Yahoo SportsThe San Antonio Spurs were interested in a deal for Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard during the offseason.

Nembhard, 24, has two years of pro experience and is currently playing for Team Canada in the Olympics. Earlier this week, the young ball handler signed a contract extension with the Pacers, as seen here Pacers on SIand it commits him to Indiana through 2027-2028.

Before that longer deal, however, the Spurs registered interest in the Gonzaga product, Fischer said. San Antonio looked at a lot of pre-prime talent at the point guard position when it was on the hunt for trades this offseason, according to the Yahoo report.

“The Spurs will be a team to watch for Nembhard going forward, sources said, after San Antonio expressed interest in Nembhard this offseason.” Fischer’s report reads: “San Antonio has called several teams around the league to evaluate veterans who are not in their prime,” it later adds.

The report also provides more details on how Nembhard, at 28, could re-enter the free agent market after his current contract expires. The Canadian guard is a key part of Indiana’s present and future.

That reality is why it made sense for the team to keep him, and a three-year, $58.5 million extension is a huge deal for the Pacers. Indiana has to be thrilled with the extension, and the interest in Nembhard only confirms that they made the right decision.

The blue and gold are nearly done with their 2024 offseason checklist after Nembhard’s extension and several smaller signings this week. Fischer’s full report can be found here.
