Erica Mena wants an ’empowering’ movie role to make up for the infamous ‘Blue Monkey’ comment

Erica Mena recently spoke with Cam Newton about the Funky Friday podcast to reflect on the controversy surrounding comments she made about her Love and Hip Hop castmate, Spice. She infamously described the Jamaican artist as a “blue monkey,” which led to a lot of backlash on social media. Speaking about the incident, Mena admitted that she has since realized that her “actions have a lot more impact than I ever thought.” She added that she was “disappointed that (she) let down women of color,” but still wishes the show had explored more of Spice’s behavior that provoked her in the first place. Furthermore, she feels there is now a “bigger mission” and wants to take on a film role that empowers women.

In response to the comments, Spice posted a lengthy statement hitting back at the comments on a post by The Shadow Room. She started, “Girl at least you admitted that you wanted to talk to me because on a normal day you couldn’t sit at my table because I knew you think you’re better than black girls. I heard you talking about me behind my back, you just got caught on camera that day. Take me out of the equation because you still have a victim mentality in our situation. What was the reason you called the promoters in Miami black animals and a monkey? Why did you call Johnni Blaze a black monkey? (It’s all on Google)”

She continued: “You brought your own son to the interview and you came to that table to talk about Amara’s twins, no one can provoke you to say racial slurs. Remember ‘You are a repeat offender,’ you have no remorse for a culture that has put millions (of dollars) in your pocket. You could have said anything but you chose to disrespect an entire nation. Interviews are not therapy, but keep it up.” Watch Mena’s full comments on the situation below.

Mena was eventually fired Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta about the “blue monkey” comments. Watch for further updates on Erica Mena on HotNewHipHop.
