Man, 43, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of HPD officer

Honolulu police today arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after allegedly injuring an arresting officer while investigating a report of a stolen car.

Police also arrested the man on suspicion of unauthorized operation of a moving vehicle and first-degree destruction of property.

An HPD highlight reported that at approximately 5:15 a.m., police encountered the suspect on Vancouver Drive in the Manoa neighborhood in a vehicle that had been reported stolen on July 12. The highlight reported that the man ignored officers’ instructions, “accelerated forward, grazed a parked vehicle, drove through a residential gate, and came to a stop after colliding with a locked garage.”

One officer was injured in the incident and was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition, the report said. HPD said the suspect, who sustained injuries from the crash, was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and cleared to remain in custody.

HPD will file charges with the District Attorney’s Office, the news item said.
