USA TODAY just released its Bars of the Year 2024 list, featuring 27 must-try bars ranging from dives to high-end cocktail joints. And two Arizona bars made the list: Barcoa Agaveria in downtown Phoenix near Roosevelt Row and Boycott Bar in the Melrose district.

The USA TODAY Network’s food journalists live and work across the country. They know their communities, and they pooled their expertise to select the list, which includes the places they spend their time and recommend to readers and friends.

Here’s how the Phoenix bar owners reacted to the news that their establishments made the cut.

Barcoa

Barcoa was selected for celebrating local Sonoran spirits with a massive list of tequilas, mezcal, bacanora, sotol, raicilla and distilado de agave.

“What? Are you kidding? I’m speechless. What an honor,” said David Tyda, who co-owns Barcoa with business partner Ryan Oberholtzer. “We built this place without a business plan. We just had our hearts open and listened to where this place wanted us to go.”

Boycott Bar

Boycott Bar was chosen because of its mission to create a safe space for women, for the LGBTQ+ community, for anyone looking for a place to “congregate, celebrate and even to grieve,” owner Audrey Corley said.

“I am so proud of Boycott,” said Corley. “I’m grateful for our communities, our allies and family and friends. Without them, I wouldn’t be who I am.”
