Bringing back Bo Davis was the perfect addition to rebuild LSU’s defensive culture

When LSU overhauled its defensive staff, Blake Baker was brought in to lead the defense, while his choices for assistants, particularly Corey Raymond and Bo Davis, received most of the attention. Both coaches would return for a third stint in Baton Rouge, and while that may confuse some fans, these were incredible signings.

Davis has a history of recruiting top players and developing them into stars and eventually first round picks. During his career, Davis has coached 17 All-Conference players, 7 All-Americans, players who have won the Outland and been nominated for several other major awards. Bringing Bo Davis back to the Bayou was one of the best decisions Brian Kelly could have made for several reasons.

For starters, Bo Davis played at LSU and knows what it takes to play at the top of his game. He was named Second-Team All-SEC in 1992. Bringing back a coach who knows the program and truly cares about LSU’s defensive culture will have an impact from day one.

In addition to his time at LSU, Davis has coached under some incredible coaches who have brought his knowledge to the table from start to finish. Davis has coached under Nick Saban at LSU, the Miami Dolphins and has had two stints at Alabama. He has also coached twice at Texas under Mack Brown and Steve Sarkisian, and in the NFL with the Jaguars and Lions.

As a recruiter, Bo Davis has already proven that he can land LSU talent on defense, such as Zion Williams, Brandon Brown and Richard Anderson. These players have all risen in the recruiting rankings since Davis showed interest in them.

The defensive culture will take a complete 180 degree turn with the new coaching staff leading the way as LSU looks to once again become one of the best defenses in the country. If you doubt Bo Davis’ ability to lead this team in the right direction, look at how he handled what went wrong at Texas in this new era of college football where most coaches are walking on eggshells.
