Alberto Chilel Santos arrested after fatal north Phoenix hit-and-run

Phoenix police arrested a suspect following a fatal hit-and-run crash in north Phoenix Sunday morning.

Officers arrested 27-year-old Alberto Chilel Santos on suspicion of homicide charges.

Police were called to the area of ​​28th Street and Grandview Road around 6 am for a vehicle collision and found a man lying in the street with injuries from a collision.

There were no signs of any other vehicles involved.

Fire department officials identified the man as 81-year-old Eduardo Ramirez Jimenez, who died at the scene.

Police found a vehicle nearby with damage consistent with a recent collision and detained the driver, Chilel Santos, who they said showed signs of impairment.

After further investigation, detectives suggested Chilel Santos was driving eastbound on Grandview Road when he drove into oncoming traffic and onto the sidewalk, where he collided with Ramirez Jimenez, who was standing on the sidewalk with his bicycle.

Officials said Chilel Santos admitted to driving away from the scene after the collision but didn’t know anyone had been hit.

Police booked him into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision. The investigation remained active.
