Georgia official, members of The Nelons killed in Wyoming plane crash

A Georgia state trooper is among those killed in a plane crash in Wyoming that also killed several members of a popular gospel group on Friday, authorities said.

The Nelons, a gospel music family from Atlanta, were en route to the Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska when the plane crashed near Gillette, Wyoming, a statement from Gaither Music Management Group said.

The people who died in the crash were Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, Amber and Nathan Kistler and their assistant, Melodi Hodges. The pilot, Larry Haynie, and his wife, Melissa, were also killed.

Larry Haynie was the chairman of the Georgia Department of Corrections Board, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed in a statement Saturday. Kemp said in the statement posted to social media that Haynie’s “impact on our state will not be forgotten.”

NTSB investigating crash that killed The Nelons

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the plane crash.

The NTSB’s preliminary report states that a Pilatus PC-12/47E struck the terrain around 1:04 p.m. MDT on Friday. Full details of the crash are still under investigation.

Keith Holloway, a media specialist with the NTSB, told USA TODAY on Saturday that the team was expected on scene that day.

“The investigation is still in the very early stages and there is not a lot of information available yet,” Holloway said.

The investigation evaluates the pilot, the aircraft and the operational environment.

“The aircraft is in a remote location and once they get access, they will begin documenting the scene and examining the aircraft,” Holloway said. “The aircraft will then be recovered and taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.”

Witnesses to the crash or anyone with relevant information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to email the NTSB at [email protected].

Who are The Nelons?

The Nelons were an Atlanta-based gospel music family quartet consisting of Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband Jason Clark, and her daughters Amber Nelon Kistler and Autumn Nelon Streetman.

Nelon Streetman, who was not on the plane, is the only surviving member of the group. She and her husband, Jamie Streetman, had arrived in Seattle and were notified of the crash, the Gaither Music statement said.

In her own statement, she added that she and her husband “appreciate your continued prayers, love and support as we get through the days ahead.”

The group, formerly The Rex Nelon Singers, was founded in 1977 by Rex Nelon as a spin-off from the group The Lefevres.

In 2016, the Nelons were inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.
