TOPEKA (KSNT) – Friends of Army Aviation is hosting events across Kansas, including in Topeka, where families can explore and fly a Vietnam-era UH-1 Huey helicopter.

The events will begin in the Kansas City area and make their way to Topeka, where families and children can learn more about the history of the aircraft and gain a better understanding of what makes them tick.

“For more than 50 years, the UH-1 Huey helicopter has held a special place in the hearts of Vietnam veterans who knew that its iconic, unmistakable sound meant help was on the way,” said Eric Puls, spokesman for Friends of Army Aviation. “Experience that sound for yourself and feel the wind on your face as we fly with the doors open, and gain a greater appreciation for this aircraft and its role on the battlefield.”

Puls said one of the event’s aims is to inspire young people to consider a career in aviation.

“Our goal with the ride along events is to give children an up-close look at the aircraft they want to explore and to provide all families with a fun and educational afternoon,” said Puls.

Events are held from 9:30am to 5pm Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Minors 16-17 may ride with written permission from their legal guardian.

Tickets will be available for purchase the day of the event and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets for the Topeka are $90 and can be found on the Friends of Army Aviation website by clicking here.

Other stops on the tour include:

  • At the American Flight Museum in Topeka
  • At the New Century Commemorative Air Force Museum
  • At the Sherman Army Airfield near Fort Leavenworth
