Auburn football flips Alabama commit Derick Smith

After a hugely successful Big Cat WeekendThe good news continues to roll in for the Auburn football program. The Tigers have added a trio of commits to their 2026 recruiting class, and the commits for the 2025 class continue to roll in.

4-star ATH Derick Smith, an Alabama commit since early Marchwent to the Plains on Saturday for Big Cat Weekend and conspicuously skipped the Tide’s cookout event the following Sunday. It seemed like it was all set and the big news came late Monday morning.

Smith hails from Selma, Alabama and is ranked as the #2 ATH in the 2025 recruiting class and is the #3 prospect out of the state. Smith committed to the Tide as a defensive back but has the ability to play both sides of the ball. Both wide receivers coach Marcus Davis and safeties coach Charles Kelly have been involved in Smith’s recruitment to the Plains and have told the ATH he can play either position. However, the Tigers are hoping Smith opts to play wide receiver.

“But they really want me as a wide receiver,” he said, via Auburn Livewhich Smith is fine with. “I love Coach (Hugh) Freeze and how he develops good receivers in the NFL. He said he can develop me into the next guy.”

Smith is the second Alabama commit to transfer to Auburn football this weekend after 4-star defender Antonio Colemanwho bounced between in-state rivals several times during his recruiting process before ultimately choosing Auburn football.

The Tigers’ 2025 recruiting class now has 20 commits and is ranked #7 overall. Smith is classified as a wide receiver on Auburn’s roster and is the fourth-highest ranked commit.
