Hawaii man committed suicide after police took DNA sample in 1991 murder of Virginia woman, attorneys say

Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Attorneys for the Innocence Project say a man who was identified as a possible new suspect in the 1991 murder and sexual assault of a Virginia woman visiting Hawaii killed himself last week after police took a DNA sample from him. In court documents filed Sunday, the attorneys say authorities tracked down the man, whose name has not been released, in recent months through genetic genealogy and obtained a DNA sample from a discarded fork. They say he killed himself last week after police went to his home to test the sample against a sample taken from him personally. Three other men have been convicted in the death of Dana Ireland.
