Johnston Police Searching for Man Accused of Killing Passenger in Crash

Johnston police are searching for a Colfax man accused of killing his motorcycle passenger in a crash over the weekend.

According to police, 44-year-old Todd Phillips crashed his motorcycle while intoxicated at the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Northwest Beaver Drive around midnight Saturday. The passenger was Michelle Shawhan, 46, of Des Moines, who was critically injured and later died from her injuries.

After the crash, police say, Phillips fled the scene. A K9 officer found him “hiding nearby,” according to a police news release.

Police arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence, driving while license suspended and serious injury by vehicle.

He was released on bail before Shawhan died and the charges were upgraded to traffic manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Police are now looking for Phillips on a warrant for parole violation stemming from charges related to the crash.

Police are asking anyone with information about Phillips’ whereabouts to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 515-286-3333 or call 911.
