Millions in Louisiana Tax Refunds Will Become ‘Unclaimed Property’ If No One Comes Forward • Louisiana Illuminator

State officials are warning of a looming deadline for Louisiana residents to claim more than $15 million in tax refunds before the money is transferred to the state treasury.

According to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Revenue, Louisiana taxpayers have until Sept. 6 to claim the money before it officially becomes unclaimed property.

The department has sent letters titled “Notice of Unclaimed Property” to 18,801 taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, advising them to claim their refunds before they are legally turned over to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office.

The amount of unclaimed refunds due upon transfer if unclaimed is $15,057,684.

Taxpayers who receive one of these letters can request their refund online at revenue.louisiana.gov/UnclaimedRefund or you can complete and return the LDR voucher enclosed with the Unclaimed Goods Notice letter dated July 26.

The state will issue paper checks to all taxpayers who file their claim electronically or with a voucher by the Sept. 6 deadline.

Any refunds not claimed within the specified time period remain the property of the taxpayer and can be picked up at the Unclaimed Property Department of the State Treasurer’s Office.
