Thomas: Glad to be free from political pollution

On June 26, I breathed a sigh of relief as I drove into Fountain Hills, leaving the visual onslaught of Shea behind me. Then I read Nancy Plencner’s letter in that day’s paper.

Ms. Plencner stated, “I recently drove through Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Phoenix. Every major thoroughfare had hundreds of candidate signs lined up for the July 30th primary. This is how we elect our leaders with open, free political expression.”

Voters, not signs, choose candidates. If a voter uses only signs to determine their vote, that is an uninformed vote.

Ms. Plencner continued, “But in Fountain Hills, city officials are once again busy removing signs. Nowhere along the miles of main streets through our community do we see political signs. In Fountain Hills, if your sign is not properly placed, it will be removed.”

The ban on signs along our main streets was authorized by ARS 16-1019, passed by Republicans. Our sign-free zones were created by Resolution 2012-31, passed when Linda Kavanagh was mayor.

I applaud and thank the Code Enforcement officers for enforcing the city’s sign laws, especially the sign-free zones. Imagine Code Enforcement enforcing the Town Code! Aren’t Republicans supposed to be the party of law and order? Or is that only the laws they like?
