Longtime Nebraska senator suspends campaign

(Omaha, NE) — A longtime state senator will not be running for his return to the Capitol. Sen. Ernie Chambers announces he has filed a motion to decline the nomination in Omaha’s District 11. Douglas County Election Commissioners are calling the move rare. Chambers says it will mark the end of his political career, which began when he was elected to the 11th District in 1970. Sen. Terrell McKinney is now unopposed in the district, but a new candidate could get on the ballot with 599 signatures by Sept. 13.
