Video shows Beech Grove HS student attacked in classroom – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) — It was the third day of school and sophomore Justin Stewart was dragged into a closet at Beech Grove High School and beaten by two students.

The boy’s mother, Debbi Khanthamany, said she was so angry when she saw a video of the incident that she started shaking. She said the school never told her about the fight. Instead, she heard about it from other parents and was the one who had to contact the school.

Khanthamany said the fight took place on Friday.

In the video, two boys attacked her 15-year-old son, Stewart, one of whom kicked him as he lay on the ground. A third student, a soccer teammate of Stewart’s, tried to intervene and was the only one who appeared to offer him protection, Khanthamany said.

Khanthamany said: “The fact that my baby was not protected in that way. I felt that he should have been protected by someone. Even in the video, you don’t hear the teacher saying anything.”

She said her son, a sophomore, claimed the teacher was in class and did nothing while another student took video of the fight.

The two boys who attacked her son were not part of the class; they walked in and dragged him into a closet to continue the attack. One of the students was an older student.

Khanthamany said her son was in tears when she found him.

“As soon as I walked into the school, I said, ‘Take me to him.’ They took me into a conference room and had to get the keys out to unlock a door. He was sitting there all alone,” she said.

She said Stewart’s teacher had sought disciplinary action against her son.

But she said he only left the classroom to seek help and was not allowed to use his cell phone to call his mother.

“In the video you see him being punched in the back of the head and kicked. They shouldn’t have locked him up alone,” Khanthamany said.

Stewart has a little swelling in his left eye. She said the doctors said he had a mild concussion.

Mitzi Garman of Beech Grove City Schools did not indicate whether the other two students face disciplinary action, saying only in a statement that “it would be inappropriate to publicly discuss the details of individual student cases.” She added, “I can confirm that our administrative team handled the investigation expeditiously and that communications were consistent with policy.”

Khanthamany said her son is ashamed that this happened, but she wants to speak out because she wants other parents to know so it doesn’t happen again. She’s also prepared to press charges.
