Harris, Trump campaigns target Michigan with less than 100 days to go

There are less than 100 days until the final day of the November general election and the start of the vote count. At the top of the list is Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, while former President Donald Trump is the Republican nominee.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) said Monday she sees voters excited about a historic choice.

“The world has changed dramatically and I have no doubt that the people of the country are ready to support a woman as president,” she said.

One of the races will determine who will replace Stabenow, who is retiring at the end of her current term. She said the election will determine whether Democrats retain the U.S. Senate and take control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Early voting has already begun for the August primaries, where voters will choose their party candidates for those positions.

“So here we are and the future of our country, the future of Michigan, is really at stake and whoever controls Congress makes a big difference, a very big difference,” she said.

Democrats say they want to remind voters of the Jan. 6 insurrection. Their message is that Trump and the Republican nomination are a threat to democracy.

Pete Hoekstra, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, said all polls show Republicans want to focus on the economy and border security.

“As a state party, we’re working seamlessly with the Trump campaign,” he told the Michigan Public Radio Network. “We’re working seamlessly with the congressional campaigns, with the Senate campaign in Washington. So I think we’re poised to be successful this fall.”

Hoekstra said he’s looking forward to seeing what happens at the Democratic National Convention next month, when Harris is expected to formally accept her party’s nomination. He also said there could be an “October surprise” in the final months of what has already been a rollercoaster campaign season.

“You know something can happen,” he said. “But you really can’t predict what it’s going to be.”
