Hawks at the Olympics | Gustafson dominates with 29 points in squeeze past China

Former Hawkeye women’s basketball player Megan Gustafson scored 29 points for Spain in a 90-89 overtime win over China on Sunday in the group stage of the Paris Olympics.

Gustafson played 40 minutes and shot an impressive 14 of 21 from the field. She also played outside the paint, grabbing eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks with no turnovers in the win.

The Spanish women’s national basketball team will compete in Group A and will be back in action against Puerto Rico on July 31 at 4:00 a.m.

As for the Iowa men’s basketball team’s representation in France, Peter Jok — who competes with South Sudan — poured in 11 points off the bench in a 90-79 win over Puerto Rico on Sunday. The victory was the team’s first ever.

Jok played 22 minutes in the game and made 4 of 6 field goals, including 3 of 4 three-pointers. He also grabbed six rebounds and had an assist.

South Sudan will play the all-star US team in Group C on July 31 at 2:00 PM CT.

But the future, not just the past, looks bright for Iowa athletics as two new Hawkeyes freshmen will be representing Canada in women’s gymnastics: Aurélie Tran and Cassie Lee.

Competing together in subdivision four, Canada qualified for the next round yesterday with 161.563 points on vault, uneven bars, floor and balance beam, edging out France and South Korea. That despite Tran’s fall on the latter event.

The final starts tomorrow, with Canada battling it out for gold against Great Britain, Romania, Japan, China, Brazil, Italy and the US.

Iowa will also be represented on the water, with former Hawkeye rower Eve Stewart representing Great Britain in the eighth women’s rowing event.

The team won the first heat today in 6:16.20 against Australia, Canada and Denmark and will play in the final on August 3 at 3:50am CT.
