Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer team up at Kamala Harris rally in Ambler

AMBLER, Pa. (CBS) — Gov. Josh Shapiro campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris at Wissahickon High School in Ambler on Monday. He got help from another Democratic governor from a swing state, Gretchen Whitmer from Michigan.

The two have supported Harris since President Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed the vice president eight days ago.

Shapiro and Whitmer on Monday praised Harris’ record as a prosecutor, her work alongside Mr. Biden and her stance on reproductive rights. Both governors also lashed out at former President Donald Trump, saying his policies led to less freedom.

“Trump and (vice presidential candidate J.D.) Vance want to bring us back, but we’re not going back,” Whitmer said. “Our answer to them is simple: no.”

“I want a future that is cleaner and greener. I want a future with better schools and safer streets. And I want a future with more freedom, not less,” Shapiro said.

The two governors have something else in common: They are both seen as possible running mates for Harris if she secures the Democratic nomination next month.

Whitmer told CBS Mornings on Monday that she plans to complete her term as governor, which ends in 2026. And while Shapiro has said that the it’s up to Harris to make a decisionhe didn’t take himself out of the race.

“I’m hoping he’s the vice presidential nominee, but I also think he’s a great candidate for governor, so I’m not sure yet,” said Radnor Township Officer Kristen Stork.

The Trump campaign will also ramp up its Pennsylvania campaign this week. Trump will rally voters in Harrisburg on Wednesday. He spent the weekend in battleground Minnesota criticizing Harris on immigration.

Trump also says he plans to return to ButlerPennsylvania, the place of the attempt on his life on July 13, but has not yet set a date.

It is not yet clear when Harris will visit the Commonwealth for her first official campaign visit.
