Floyd Lansing “Darling” Reed III, 78, of Montoursville, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family.

He was born in Williamsport on March 20, 1946, the son of the late Floyd Lansing Reed Jr. and Freda L. (Smith) Reed. Lanny married his wife of 42 years, the former Debra E. Way on February 5, 1982.

Lanny graduated from Montoursville High School in 1964. In 1965, he enlisted in the United States Air Force to serve his country as a security guard. Lanny went on to earn his associate degree from the former Williamsport Area Community College.

He worked as a detective for both the City of Williamsport and Lycoming County for over 40 years and received many honors. Lanny retired from the Williamsport Bureau of Police in 1996 and from the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office in 2008 as Chief County Detective. After his retirement, Lanny continued to work as a private investigator until 2022.

Lanny started the Golden Dragon Family Training Center in 1970. He shared his 55-year passion for judo to help fellow officers, women and youth learn to defend themselves. Lanny was a member of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, FOP Lodge 29 and American Legion Post 104.

He lived his life according to the definition of Judo, “the gentle way.”

In addition to his wife, Debra, he is survived by three sons, Ronald (Terri) Hendershot, of Watsontown, Jonathan (Bethany) Mitchell, of Tallahassee, Fla., Garrett Reed, of Montoursville; two daughters, Wendy (Kurt) Neiman, of Williamsport, April Cellini, of South Williamsport; two stepsons, James Pryor, of Williamsport, Rantz (Susan) Pryor Jr., of Maple Shade, N.J.; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Christopher (Lisa) Reed, of Montoursville; a sister, Katie (Ed Rusczyk) Reed, of Cogan Station; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lanny is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Amy Reed.

A memorial service for Lanny will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation and Funeral Home, 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport. Family and friends are invited to visit from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the funeral home on Tuesday.
