Reggie Jackson brings experience and depth to 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have been the most active movers this NBA offseason. After years of struggles, the team has been as All-In as they come, and the results are clear. Since the Joel Embiid draft, the team has yet to show any significant signs of success. Furthermore, their last great playoff run was with Allen Iverson over 20 years ago. Last season, when the team traded away James Harden, there was a clear vision that GM Daryl Morey had. So far this offseason, it’s hard to argue that that vision has been achieved.

Immediately after free agency opened, Paul George made it clear that he would not re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. Instead, he would be meeting with other teams. A flirtation between the two sides that began with Joel Embiid eyeing him as a potential running mate during the NBA Finals broadcast culminated in George signing a four-year, $212 million contract. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Immediately after, re-signing MIP and rising superstar Tyrese Maxey became a priority. Once that deal was done, the Sixers had the rest of the rotation in mind. Thanks to a series of smart acquisitions, the team has gone from strength to strength. Now, when training camp begins, Philadelphia could be in with one of the best and deepest rosters in basketball.

The depth the Sixers have to offer

In the new NBA parity drive, depth is paramount. While a 7- or 8-man rotation was the norm in the playoffs, teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder are going as deep as 11 men. As a result, building a roster full of competent role players becomes increasingly important as the season progresses. As it turns out, Philadelphia got the memo.

In addition to the new Big 3 in town, the front office has been hard at work building a roster around them. Their first big win came in the 2024 NBA draft, when they acquired a sharpshooter in Jared McCain who could be a Day 1 contributor, at least in a limited role. But when free agency began, the 76ers took things a step further.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMOURS: Reggie Jackson, Philadelphia 76ers Updates

On Day 1, the signings of Kelly Oubre Jr. and Andre Drummond came to the forefront. Both familiar with the city and the team, Oubre and Drummond had arguably the best years of their careers in the City of Brotherly Love. At least in Drummond’s case, after his first stint in Detroit. The team didn’t stop there, though. In addition to Kelly and his two-way excellence, the team even saw Kyle Lowry return to further bolster the backcourt rotation, before signing a favorite of Morey’s in Eric Gordon.

The team isn’t done making moves, though. Their newest addition is a true veteran. Reggie Jackson, who just made back-to-back postseason appearances with the Denver Nuggets, went to the Charlotte Hornets as part of a salary dump. After being cut, the NBA champion was quickly snapped up by the Sixers to bolster their core.

Veteran Reggie Jackson Gives PG a Familiar Face

Paul George has a familiar face in both Eric Gordon and Reggie Jackson. During the Clippers’ most successful year, it was PG13 and Jackson who led them to a Conference Finals berth. During that run, Reggie was sensational in his shot-making and clutch-time performance. Averaging 17.8 points on 40% shooting from deep, his production was invaluable to LA.

Though he’s far removed from those glory days, he can still be a valuable replacement in sporadic appearances. During the Nuggets’ run to the championship, Jackson was the only replacement in non-Jamal Murray minutes and held his own. A career scorer of 12.6 ppg, Reggie could function as a veteran leader for Philadelphia, having started 87 playoff games.
