St Helens injury news and return dates with 4 new concerns

St Helens are struggling at the moment. Paul Wellens’ side are still missing a host of key names and their injury problems have taken their toll on their performances as the Saints have lost five Super League games in a row. It’s a run of form that has seen them drop to sixth and another loss this week could see them slip into a play-off spot.

In preparation for the final eight games of the Super League season, we look at the Saints’ current injury list and potential return dates.

Jack Welsby

The last thing St Helens needed was Welsby to go on the road against Leigh Leopards last week and it looks like the full-back could be facing a lengthy spell out. Wellens confirmed it was a hamstring issue and the club hope to know more this week as fans fear the worst.

Alex Walmsley

Walmsley was sidelined for four months at the end of April after undergoing surgery for a meniscus injury. He has now been out for three months and is ahead of schedule, with a return in the coming weeks a possibility.

Sione Mata’utia

Mata’utia has not been seen since June after suffering a neck injury, but the club are yet to confirm a return date as they give the forward the time he needs to recover.

Konrad Hurrell

Hurrell is also battling a neck injury which is expected to rule him out for the rest of the season. The club must make a decision on the Tonga international as the player’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Morgan Kennes

Knowles is set to return to action after undergoing surgery for a groin injury in late May. He was initially expected to miss five to six weeks, but could be back in action this weekend.

Jake Wingfield

Underwent shoulder surgery earlier this season and looks set to miss most, if not all, of the remainder of the regular season. He should be fit in time for the play-offs, but Saints obviously need to make it there first.

Joe Batchelor

The backrower has not been seen since May due to an ankle injury, but if all goes well he should be able to play again within a few weeks.

George Delaney

Delaney got into trouble against Leigh last week when Wellens insisted the forward play ‘on one leg’ for a while. We’ll know more this week, most likely.

Moses Mbye

Mbye had to be withdrawn against the Leopards. Again, we will know more about the possibility of a lay-off this week.

Mark Percival

Percival has struggled in recent weeks and was injured when he had to stop against Leigh, so it remains to be seen whether he will be sidelined for a while.
