TRANSLATION:

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, July 30, 2024, this is John Frenaye and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief, presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

Today is all about things that float (or not) and things that fly! And Rams Head On STage has been flooding mew with tickets to give away to all of you. So I guess it’s time for some news, shall we?

Maryland TikTok waterman Luke McFadden reported that his new boat was vandalized shortly after purchase, around 10 hours after the fact! McFadden, who is from Pasadena, discovered the vandalism on Thursday morning. The vandalism occurred in the early morning of July 25, with thieves destroying electronics, hydraulic lines, windows and other parts of the vessel, but leaving behind tools and baskets. Maryland Natural Resources Police confirmed damage to windows and electronics, with some items reported stolen. Video footage showed two men on the boat for about 30 minutes before driving away. McFadden, who has more than 1.7 million followers on TikTok, has received widespread support from his followers. Despite the setback, McFadden remains focused on running his business and encouraged people to support him by purchasing crabs or merchandise. McFadden believes the break-in and damage may be related to his social media profile.

After the yacht Lovebug capsized in the West River on Saturday. According to the Coast Guard, a small oil spill was contained at the mouth of the West River after the 121-foot yacht capsized. No pollution was initially reported, but light oil slicks were visible Monday. An oil boom was placed around the yacht to contain the spill, and a second boom was added later. The yacht remains stuck in the bay and a salvage plan is being developed to minimize its impact on the environment. The Coast Guard is leading the investigation. And we added a video to our article on EyeOnAnnapolis.net – it was really interesting to see it up close.

This is from the Capital and the Annapolis City Council and the police department are considering a drone program to improve rapid response to crime scenes. Ward 5 Alderman Brooks Schandelmeier is leading the charge. Since June 2023, Annapolis officials have been consulting with Hagerstown authorities, who use drones for a variety of tasks, including tracking dirt bike riders and monitoring large events. They say the program is still in its early stages, with a focus on public understanding and policy development. The council plans to seek input from residents and ensure the program respects privacy and civil rights. Now, the APD already has a drone program that was instituted by former Mayor Pantelides, and The Capital says those drones aren’t being used because there aren’t enough trained operators. So my question is, why are we reinventing the wheel and will qualified drone operators magically appear once these $15,000 drones are purchased?
